Caring for Brass Pooja Items
Keep your brass idols, lamps, and pooja vessels gleaming with these simple, time-tested cleaning methods.
Brass idols, diyas, and pooja vessels are a treasured part of every Indian home. Over time, brass naturally darkens and develops a patina — but with a little care, you can keep your pooja items looking bright and beautiful.
Why Brass Tarnishes
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. When exposed to air, moisture, and the oils from regular handling, its surface slowly oxidises and dulls. This is normal and harmless — it can be cleaned off easily.
Gentle Home Cleaning
- Tamarind or lemon paste: Rub a little tamarind pulp or lemon with salt over the surface, then rinse and dry. This is the traditional, gentle method.
- Vinegar and flour: Mix equal parts vinegar, salt, and flour into a paste, apply for 10 minutes, then rinse and buff dry.
- Always dry thoroughly with a soft cloth — trapped moisture is the main cause of spotting.
Do's and Don'ts
- Do store brass items in a dry place, ideally wrapped in soft cloth.
- Do clean before festivals so your pooja room shines.
- Don't use steel wool or harsh abrasives — they scratch the finish.
- Don't leave lamp oil or kumkum residue on the surface for long.
