A Buyer’s Guide to Nuts & Dry Fruits

How to pick, store, and get the best value from almonds, cashews, raisins, and more for your kitchen.

Nuts and dry fruits are a staple in Indian kitchens — for daily snacking, festive sweets, and gifting. Buying well and storing right keeps them fresh and flavourful for months.

How to Judge Quality

  • Almonds: Look for plump, uniform kernels with a smooth, unbroken skin. Avoid shrivelled or oily-smelling nuts.
  • Cashews: Choose whole, creamy-white kernels (grade W240 or W320 are popular). Yellowing indicates age.
  • Raisins: Should be soft and slightly translucent, not hard or overly sticky.
  • Pistachios & walnuts: A fresh, mild aroma is the best sign of quality; a rancid smell means old stock.

Smart Storage

  • Keep nuts in airtight containers away from heat and sunlight.
  • For long-term storage, the refrigerator or freezer prevents the natural oils from turning rancid.
  • Buy in quantities you will use within a couple of months for the best taste.

Buying in Bulk

For weddings, festivals, or regular family use, buying dry fruits in bulk is far more economical. Mangal & Mangal Super Store offers value packs and bulk quantities — reach out for wholesale enquiries on large orders.
