By Anika ReddyChoosing the Right Pressure Cooker
Inner-lid or outer-lid, aluminium or stainless steel, induction or gas — a simple guide to picking the perfect cooker.
A pressure cooker is the workhorse of the Indian kitchen — but with so many types available, choosing the right one can be confusing. Here is what to consider.
Inner-Lid vs Outer-Lid
- Outer-lid cookers are the classic design, easy to clean and great for larger families.
- Inner-lid cookers seal from inside, are more compact, and are considered safer as the lid cannot open while pressurised.
Material Choice
| Material | Best For |
|---|---|
| Aluminium | Lightweight, heats fast, budget-friendly |
| Stainless Steel | Durable, non-reactive, ideal for daily use |
| Hard-anodised | Scratch-resistant, even heating |
Size Guide
- 2–3 L: Singles and couples
- 3–5 L: Small families
- 5–7.5 L: Large families and bulk cooking
Gas or Induction?
If you use an induction cooktop, look for cookers with an induction-compatible base. Many modern stainless steel cookers work on both gas and induction.
